‘Udders Orchard make cider from ordinary apples from in and around Huddersfield. Thousands of apple trees grow without want for their apples. We lovingly make cider from these unloved, uncared for apples. |

06 September 2011 Up the Apples and Pears!Huddersfield’s cider maker would like to rescue your unwanted apples and pears from the compost heap. ‘Udders Orchard’s David Kendall-Smith produces real cider made from locally-sourced apples, and perry from pears, but without an orchard of his own, David is appealing for householders to donate their unwanted apples from trees on their land. David said “Udders Orchard is about utilizing otherwise unused fruit”. He can collect the apples himself, or you can drop them off, from anywhere near Huddersfield and offers in return a bottle of the finished product. Real cider is made from the fermentation of 100% juice. With the help of The Huddersfield Examiner, and the generosity of Huddersfield’s people, David managed to produce 800 litres of cider and perry last year and some of his cider will be available at Huddersfield Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Octoberfest in October. It has also been available at The Rat & Ratchet, The Grove, The Shepherd’s Boy in Dewsbury and at festivals further afield. David is planning to purchase land to plant an orchard but in the meantime he hopes to harvest enough apples from the town’s gardens to make 2000 litres of real cider and perry this year. Capacity has been doubled this year to cope with demand not only for ‘Udders Orchard Huddersfield Cider and Perry but also for people wishing to see their fruit being put to good use. Anyone who would like to offer some apples or pears can contact David on 07817367752, by email at dave@uddersorchard.co.uk, Twitter www.twitter.com/uddersorchard
